An amendment added to the Senate health care reform bill last week would effectively force health insurance companies to enter into contracts with entities such as Planned Parenthood, who perform abortions. One of the most striking elements of this amendment is the sweeping powers it would grant the federal government.

Civitas: The N.C. Racial Injustice Act

Take a trip with me down memory lane to the mid-60's, 70's and early 80's and try to remember the huge surge in violent crime that swept across the United States. The judicial activism of Chief Supreme Court Justice Earl Warren laid the foundation for liberal action against the death penalty. The result of tampering with capital punishment was immediate and clear. Murder rates spiked in the 70's and didn't really come back down until voters demanded tough penalties and reinstatement of the death penalty.

The impact of bringing back capital punishment is very clear. According to the US Bureau of Justice Statistics, since 1994, violent crime rates have declined, reaching the lowest level ever in 2005. So why would legislators in Raleigh seek to weaken North Carolina's death penalty?

N.C. Mobile Barbershop Program Comedy

The N.C. legislature is requesting funds for a "Mobile Barbershops Pilot Program." This is a complete waste of $100,000 in taxpayer dollars so we at Civitas have decided to create a video parodying the true hilarity of this bill.

With the introduction of SB 460 by Sen. Don Davis (D-Greene), (Identical Bill HB 460 by Representatives Jeffus(D- Guilford); Dickson (D- Cumberland);  Harrison (D- Guilford)) yet another branch of the extremist animal rights movement has surfaced in North Carolina.

While the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) may have a familiar sound to some, its legislative agenda is far from the mainstream.  It is a large, wealthy and powerful "humane society" in name only. HSUS has accumulated $113 million in assets and built a recognizable name by capitalizing on the confusion its very name provokes.
